In the bustling landscape of independent horology, many brands lead with specs – water resistance, movement calibers, and lug-to-lug measurements. For ACIZEM Watches, founded in Ottawa, Canada, the technical serves the emotional.
This isn’t just a microbrand, it’s a masterclass in storytelling through “sculptural architecture” and human experience.
A Foundation in Multiculturalism
The brand’s DNA was forged long before the first prototype was sketched. Founder and design artist Éluu Goddiâ traces the emotional origins of ACIZEM to Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal – one of Canada’s most diverse neighborhoods.
Living amidst 150 nationalities, the founder witnessed a “living mosaic” of personal histories and traditions coexisting in a single space.
“That experience became one of the earliest emotional inspirations behind ACIZEM Watches… I became interested in how a timepiece could embody identity, transition, symbolism, and human experience.“
The Enygmah: A Study in Reinvention
The flagship Enygmah collection isn’t meant to be understood at a glance. It was designed to mirror the journey of reinvention – the process of leaving the familiar behind to rebuild oneself through uncertainty and resilience.
Instead of literal symbols, the Enygmah communicates through its physical form. It utilizes:
- Layered Textures: Adding visual complexity that shifts with the light.
- Asymmetry & Depth: Creating a watch that feels “emotionally evolving” depending on the angle.
- Gradual Reveal: Much like a new city or a new life, the watch is designed to reveal its charms through interaction rather than immediate familiarity.
The Olive Coin: Symbols of Convergence
While the Enygmah explores the self, the Olive Coin explores the collective. Inspired by the olive tree – a cross-cultural symbol of peace and continuity – this collection reflects how certain icons transcend boundaries. The design features a sculpted coin-inspired dial and an engraved olive crest on the case-back, bridging the gap between Mediterranean heritage and modern Canadian design.
MBWW Editor: You mention Montréal and Ottawa as major influences. How does your environment shape your watches?
ACIZEM: Montréal gave me the “living mosaic” of identities that inspired the Enygmah. Ottawa, on the other hand, influences me through its calm atmosphere and seasonal contrasts. It provides the rhythm necessary to turn those abstract feelings into wearable objects.
MBWW Editor: We saw an independent reviewer mention they were “unsure” at first but quickly grew to love the Enygmah. How did that make you feel?
ACIZEM: That response resonated deeply. The Enygmah was intentionally designed to reveal itself gradually.
In a world of instant gratification, I want a watch that requires you to sit with it, to see how it looks in different lighting, and to let it grow on you.
MBWW Editor: What is the ultimate goal for ACIZEM?
ACIZEM: We are still a young independent brand, but the goal is larger than producing watches. It’s about creating conversation and reflection.

Behind the Dial: An Interview with the Founder of ACIZEM
MBWW Editor: Your work feels very different from the “tool watch” aesthetic we often see in microbrands. How do you approach the design process?
ACIZEM: My process is heavily visual and artistic before it ever becomes technical. Many ideas begin as abstract concepts or emotional narratives. I want each piece to feel like an object with emotional weight – something that creates curiosity long after the first impression.
